Ministries within our community and beyond our church to the broader community are a part of life together. The opportunity to participate in these ministries are a vital part of joining with God Mission in the world.
We believe that forming community with fellow church members is very important. To help in the forming of this community, an informal coffee hour is held most Sundays. There are also a number of informal small groups that centre on bible or book study, special interests, or exercise activities. For example, in 2015 a number of us undertook to read the Bible in One Year (Chronological Bible Reading Plan).
One of our ministries is the Foothills Mennonite Guest House, which provides convenient, comfortable and affordable short-term accommodations for people with family or friends in the hospital. This ministry has been operated by Foothills Mennonite Church since 2007.
Foothills Mennonite Church is currently sponsoring a Syrian family that arrived in Canada in late 2015. We help this family with practical things like housing, finances, and grocery shopping, as well as offering friendship and emotional support. We have sponsored refugees from time to time over the past 30 years.
We support Camp Valaqua, the church camp of Mennonite Church Alberta, financially and through volunteering. Camp Valaqua is located 1 hour NW of Calgary near Water Valley Alberta, beautifully situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains on the Little Red Dear River. Foothills members have worked at Camp Valaqua in volunteer positions including kitchen help, maintenance, and camp nurse. By volunteering, we help the camp keep an affordable fee structure.
Relief and Development
We support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in its world-wide work in relief and development. MCC shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC runs programs in Canada (notably refugee settlement) and in many other countries.
In addition to supporting MCC with direct financial contributions, many Foothills Mennonite Church members volunteer at, shop, or donate used goods to the Calgary MCC Thrift Shop. All net income from this Thrift Shop go to supporting MCC. The Thrift Shop also functions to keep quality used goods from needlessly filling our landfills!
We run a Sunday School program from September to May. A Vacation Bible School program is typically run for one week during the summer.
Menno Simons Christian School is a Christian educational community (Kindergarten to Grade Nine) within the Anabaptist/Mennonite faith tradition. Together with the home and the church, it offers an Education for Life providing opportunities for students to integrate sound academic learning with growth in character, faith, and service to God. It is part of the Palliser Regional School Division. Foothills Mennonite Church financially supports Menno Simons Christian School, and several members work at the school in staff or volunteer positions.
Conferences and Overseas Missions
Foothills Mennonite Church works together with other Mennonite churches through our conferences, Mennonite Church Alberta and Mennonite Church Canada, to support missions and Christian education in Canada and beyond.
